Grown-up spelling bee
helps Portland youngsters
Schoolhouse
Supplies, a free store for Portland teachers, will hold its
annual Wells Fargo Celebrity Spelling Bee on Thursday, Jan. 31,
in the Portland Art Museum Grant Ballroom. Guaranteed to shake
off the new-year doldrums, the spelling bee has become a
tradition for Portlanders who want to support students, refine
their spelling skills from the safety of their seats and enjoy
the city’s celebrities as they display their own spelling
prowess.
The evening begins at 5 p.m.
with a cocktail reception and silent auction. The bee starts at 7
p.m. Tickets are $125 each or $1,250 for a table.
This year, Pink Martini’s
China Forbes and Thomas Lauderdale (both previous Celebrity
Spelling Bee champions) will serve as moderators and judges,
clearing the field for competition by local journalists, city
leaders, sports figures and more.
Schoolhouse Supplies, which
operates under the auspices of the Portland Schools Foundation,
offers classroom supplies for public school teachers in Portland.
Since opening in January 2000, it has distributed supplies
— primarily donated by businesses in the community —
with an estimated retail value of over $7 million.
