Madison student wins
city award

The city of Portland has named
Madison High School senior Jamie Mayfield a recipient of its
Spirit of Portland Award for her volunteer work last summer at a
Northeast Portland park. She was among 21 individuals and
organizations recognized for exceptional contributions to the
community in 2007.
In a letter nominating Jamie for the award, Roseway Heights SUN
Community School site manager Jeanne West said: “Children
looked forward to playing with her, and parents or caregivers
knew she was dependable, responsible, and good with their
children.”
Jamie volunteered more than 100 hours working with the program,
helping to serve lunch, play games, run sports camps and assist
with other activities at Glenhaven Park.
Other award recipients included Jan Meskimen, Norma Godfrey and
Shei’Meka Newman for their efforts at Jefferson High
School. Meskimen and Godfrey created the CommUnity Room for
students, parents, employees and community members, and Newman
started Lunch Jones, an open forum program for Jefferson
students.
