Soccer girls, football
boys wrap seasons on high note

Capping a
fall sports season that held both bumps and bright spots for
Portland Interscholastic League athletes, Lincoln High School
girls took first place in the 6A state soccer championships and
two PPS football players, from Grant and Roosevelt, earned top
honors.
Lincoln girls defeated Canby,
Sunset, South Salem and Lake Oswego high schools in the state
soccer playoffs before beating Central Catholic after a tense
shootout in the championship game. The last PIL school to win a
state title was Wilson High School in 1977.
“It was one of the most
exciting games I have ever seen, and the strength and courage and
endurance the girls demonstrated was impressive to say the
least,” says Lincoln Principal Peyton Chapman.
In football, Grant player
Andre Broadus was named the Oregon 6A offensive player of the
year and to the first team on defense, and Roosevelt player
Cameron Jackson was selected the 2007 scholar-athlete of the year
by the Portland chapter of the National Football Foundation and
College Hall of Fame.
“Andre’s a great
kid on and off the field,” says Grant football coach Diallo
Lewis. “He’s very special and has great
character.”
Jackson’s honor, wrote
Roosevelt coach Camden McFarland in a letter to the community,
was “truly a prestigious award” and “a great
indication of what a wonderful job Cameron has done to become an
exceptional student, athlete and person.”
In boys soccer, Grant and
Cleveland high schools placed second in the 6A and 5A state
championships, respectively. In cross country, Grant High School
placed third in Oregon 6A boys cross country competition;
Franklin High School student Bryce Burgess was the first place
individual winner.
