New classroom materials up for
consideration: health, PE, social studies and world
languages
Families, staff and community
members are invited to two meetings this month on new curriculum
materials for Portland Public Schools. On Thursday, Jan. 24,
three advisory committees will present their work thus far
regarding materials adoptions in preK-12 health, preK-12 physical
education and grades 6-8 social studies. On Tuesday, Jan. 29, the
adoption process will begin for grades 8-12 world languages. The
purpose of adoption is a common set of materials that all schools
use as their primary resource for teaching.
The Jan. 24 meeting will run from 7-8:30 p.m. at Harriet Tubman
Leadership Academy for Young Women, 2231 N. Flint Ave. Those in
attendance will be able to examine materials, review standards,
ask questions and provide input. In addition, materials will be
on display in rooms 217, 224 and 226 of the academy for viewing
and input from 3:30-7 p.m. Jan. 15, Jan. 23, Jan. 29, Feb. 5,
Feb. 12 and Feb. 20.
Committee recommendations will go to Superintendent Carole Smith
in February for social studies, health and physical education.
Smith will present her recommendations to the Board of
Education’s Student Achievement Committee, and ultimately
the board will vote on materials, for districtwide use beginning
in the 2008-09 year.
The Jan. 29 meeting is scheduled from 6:30-8 p.m. at the
Blanchard Education Service Center, 501 N. Dixon St. At that
meeting, applications will be available for the world languages
advisory committee. They can also be downloaded at http://www.otl.pps.k12.or.us/.docs/pg/11136.
The process will be the same as for other materials; however,
districtwide use will begin in the 2009-10 year.
