State rates
most PPS schools strong or exceptional
on
annual report
cards
Portland, Ore., Oct. 7,
2008: More than half of
rated schools in Portland Public Schools
received "strong" or "exceptional" grades
on Oregon school report cards released
today, with 95 percent of rated schools
earning satisfactory or better grades.
Ten PPS schools were not graded for
2007-08 because of significant changes in
their structure.
Three-quarters of
PPS schools rated maintained their
grade from 2006-07. Seven schools
received higher grades this year, with
13 receiving lower ones.
The
four schools rated "low" or
"unacceptable" were high schools -
highlighting the importance of the
city-wide high school redesign
currently underway.
This
is the 10th year for Oregon school
report cards. Beginning next year,
schools will receive one of three
possible ratings rather than five:
Outstanding, Satisfactory or In Need of
Improvement. Ratings also will be more
focused on the academic growth of
individual students.
Eighteen Portland
Public Schools have been rated "strong"
or "exceptional" in each of the 10
years of the state report cards:
Ainsworth, Alameda, Astor, Bridlemile,
Buckman, Chapman, Duniway, Laurelhurst,
Lewis, Llewellyn, Richmond, Rieke and
Winterhaven elementary schools,
Jackson, Mt. Tabor and West Sylvan
middle schools, Lincoln High School and
the Metropolitan Learning Center,
K-12.
In
addition, both Hollyrood K-3 and
Fernwood Middle School were rated
"strong" or "exceptional" for nine
years, before merging into one school
last year. That school, now named
Beverly Cleary, was not rated the 10th
year because of the change in student
population.
